I can log everything
Right off the bat, Gameye is fantastic because it allows me to register just about anything you could reasonably consider a part of a game collection. The app’s home page includes five sections, for games, systems, peripherals, toys to life, and print media. Yes, if you’re a gaming magazine enthusiast, even those can be logged here — though, admittedly, that’s not me. But I love everything else here.
Of course, the games section is the biggest one, and it’s very comprehensive. I’m exclusively focused on Nintendo, but just looking at the list of available platforms, you can see some obscure and forgotten consoles like the Apple Pippin or the Vectrex. It covers everything from very old platforms to the latest ones like the Nintendo Switch 2, and as far as the platforms I know, I’ve never been unable to find a game I was looking for. Games even have separate listings for bundles, so things like my copy of Resident Evil: Revelations for the Nintendo 3DS, which included the Circle Pad Pro accessory, or the limited edition of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on the Wii, which included a special golden Wii Remote, can be logged properly as a set.
The same goes for systems that include extra games and peripherals, and it makes it easy to keep track of everything I’ve bought while keeping all the details accurate. The only time where this hasn’t worked for me is the toys-to-life section, where I log my amiibo figures from Nintendo. I have the Samus and E.M.M.I bundle that launched alongside Metroid Dread back in 2021, but these two figures only appear as separate entities for me. Still, at least I can register them in some capacity.
One feature I haven’t been able to get to work reliably is the barcode scanner, which is supposed to make it easier to add games to your collection by using the camera to scan barcodes on the game boxes. I gave it a go again while writing this article, and I got it to work with ZombiU on the Wii U, but the Nintendo Switch games I tried returned no results. Maintaining a database of barcodes is definitely challenging, but it’s still a shame it doesn’t work better.
