Pirate Adventures Take Center Stage This November

This November has seen a remarkable surge in pirate-themed gaming, eclipsing the usual offerings of moustaches and discounted PC components. The month kicked off with the much-anticipated release of Salt 2, a survival simulation that has officially set sail into its 1.0 version, inviting players to immerse themselves in its vast oceanic world. Following closely, the gaming landscape welcomed Captain Wayne: Vacation Desperation, an action-packed shooter crafted using the iconic Doom engine, bringing a nostalgic twist to the buccaneer genre.

Adding to the excitement is Davy x Jones, a supernatural adventure that originally launched in August. This roguelike first-person shooter allows players to step into the shoes of a headless pirate named Jones, navigating the underworld alongside his chatty companion, a skull named Davy. The latest update has significantly expanded the game’s horizons, introducing a second gameplay mode where players can command a “living ship” as they explore the underworld from a third-person perspective. This ship, named Abby, boasts a striking design—a wooden hull fused with elements of a cosmic space whale, creating a visually captivating yet eerie presence.

In this new sailing mode, players can engage in naval battles, trading broadsides with other spectral vessels. The update also introduces a crew recruitment system, allowing players to gather fellow ghostly pirates who bring a variety of new weapons, attack types, and abilities to the fray. Among the highlights is a thrilling boss fight against the Kraken, which developer Parasight describes as a dynamic encounter that will challenge players’ strategic thinking, crew management, and ship defenses.

The update does not stop there; it also enhances the first-person combat experience for Jones. Players can now execute heavy attacks, rapid strikes, and a more intricate 5-hit combo system. Gunplay has been meticulously rebalanced, incorporating ammo limits and a refined reload mechanism, while melee attacks have received improved animations. Additionally, enemy AI has been tweaked to provide a more engaging combat experience.

Further enriching the gameplay, the update redesigns the skill tree to align with the new crew system, adds a comprehensive codex filled with tips and tutorials, and supports advanced graphics technologies like Nvidia frame generation and FSR4. Steam achievements have also been included, adding an extra layer of challenge for players.

Despite the impressive scope of this update, Parasight has advised that existing save files may become “corrupted and incompatible” due to the extensive changes implemented. For newcomers eager to dive into the world of Davy x Jones, the game is currently available at a 20% discount until December 9, bringing the price down to .39/£12.
