A recent surge of enthusiasm surrounding the fantasy film “A Minecraft Movie” has not only captivated audiences but also inspired some questionable behavior. Two young men, aged 21 and 22, found themselves embroiled in a peculiar incident at a Georgia theater, where they attempted to make off with a large cardboard display promoting the film.
On the night of April 6, the duo executed their plan at the University 16 theater located on the Oconee Connector. Just before midnight, they entered the venue with the intention of stealing the display, which has become a popular attraction due to the film’s impressive box office performance and viral fan reactions. Their getaway vehicle was an Audi, which they hoped would facilitate a swift escape.
However, their scheme was thwarted by an observant bystander in the parking lot, who captured a photo of the suspects’ vehicle and promptly alerted the theater’s manager. This crucial piece of evidence set off a chain of events that would lead to the identification of the two men.
Sheriff’s Cpl. Baer Schiffer reviewed surveillance footage of the incident and noted the license plate number of the Audi. He then reached out to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office to track down the car’s registered owner in Canton, Georgia. Upon discovering that the vehicle belonged to the owner’s son, the deputy managed to contact the 21-year-old suspect directly.
During the conversation, the young man admitted to making “a bad decision.” He and his accomplice, who resides in Athens, were instructed to return the stolen display to the sheriff’s office, which they did without delay.
As of now, the men have not faced any charges, as the theater manager has yet to decide whether to pursue legal action. The incident serves as a reminder of the lengths to which some individuals may go in the name of fandom, even as the excitement surrounding “A Minecraft Movie” continues to grow.
