Ubisoft partners with Hooded Horse for unfinished Heroes of Might and Magic project

In a notable shift within the gaming landscape, French video game titan Ubisoft has entrusted the unfinished project, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, to the independent publisher Hooded Horse. This collaboration marks a significant step in the development of a title that has been eagerly anticipated since its announcement in August 2024.

Collaboration and Development

Hooded Horse, known for its work on Manor Lords, has been tasked with the dual responsibility of completing and launching Olden Era. The original developers, Unfrozen, remain actively involved in the project, ensuring that the vision for the game continues to evolve. The anticipated release is set for Early Access sometime in 2025, promising to deliver a fresh experience to fans of the franchise.

Tim Bender, CEO of Hooded Horse, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Heroes of Might and Magic is a legendary series, one that has a place in the hearts and childhoods of many gamers. We’re honoured to be teaming up with Ubisoft and Unfrozen on this project.” His sentiment underscores the deep-rooted nostalgia associated with the series and the commitment to honoring its legacy.

Alain Corre, Ubisoft’s chief publishing officer, echoed this excitement, remarking, “We are thrilled to welcome Hooded Horse aboard to support the next chapter of Heroes of Might and Magic. Their passion for the franchise and strong connection with strategy communities make them the perfect complement to Unfrozen’s creative talent. Together, we’ll reignite Heroes of Might and Magic and bring players to exciting, unexplored realms.”

While the reasons behind Ubisoft’s decision to hand off this project remain somewhat ambiguous, it may be linked to the ongoing transformations within the company. Recently, Ubisoft spun out a new entity with the backing of Tencent, focusing on its core intellectual properties, which notably does not include Heroes of Might and Magic.
