Revitalizing the Real-Time Strategy Genre
The landscape of real-time strategy (RTS) games has often felt more like a dark age than a flourishing period, yet a few standout titles have emerged over the last decade. Among these, Northgard, a Viking-themed RTS released in 2018, shines brightly. This game, rooted in traditional strategy mechanics, introduces innovative elements such as dynamic weather systems and a region-based expansion approach, setting it apart from its predecessors.
Fraser Brown, in his review of Northgard, noted that while the game draws clear inspiration from the RTS classics of the ’90s, it transcends mere nostalgia. He awarded it an impressive score of 84%, emphasizing that the Viking saga is not constrained by its historical influences.
The recently launched Northgard: Definitive Edition enhances the original experience with new features. A notable addition is a Valhalla-themed biome, inviting players to expand their Viking territories. Furthermore, several biomes that were previously exclusive to the Bifröst mode—a wave-based conquest scenario—are now accessible across various game modes. The update also revamps the in-game shop and includes a digital artbook and art gallery, enriching the overall player experience.
For existing players, the expansions and enhancements from the Definitive Edition will be available as a complimentary update. Meanwhile, for those contemplating their first venture into the world of Northgard, Shiro Games is currently offering the Definitive Edition at a remarkable 60% discount. This promotion reduces the price from the new retail price of (£29.50) to just (£11.80), with the offer valid until December 18.
Northgard is not alone in receiving significant updates this week. On Tuesday, Tempest Rising, a successor to the iconic Command & Conquer series, introduced transformative superweapons for every faction. This update also includes the newly playable Veti faction, which developer Slipgate Ironworks is currently testing in a public beta for the next two weeks.
