Warhammer Classics brings dozens of lost games to Steam, including my blursed childhood favorite

In the expansive universe of Warhammer games, discerning which titles merit attention can be a challenge. While some entries, such as Warhammer 40k Dawn of War, have garnered acclaim for their strategic depth, others, like Storm of Vengeance, have fallen flat. Yet, one title remains etched in my memory from childhood: Warhammer 40,000 Fire Warrior. Now, this nostalgic gem is making its way to Steam as part of the Warhammer Classics collection, and I find myself eager to see if it can rekindle the magic of my youth. In an effort to preserve that nostalgia, I’m intentionally steering clear of online reviews.

Reviving the Classics

Fire Warrior is among seven titles debuting on Steam within this collection, alongside notable names such as Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, Final Liberation: Warhammer Epic 40,000, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate, Warhammer 40,000: Rites of War, Warhammer: Dark Omen, and Warhammer: Mark of Chaos – Gold Edition.

In addition to these newcomers, a host of re-releases is also making its way to the platform. This includes the first two Dawn of War games, Battlefleet Gothic, and an impressive total of 17 additional titles. Some, like Dawn of War, have been staples in my gaming repertoire, while others, such as Rites of War, are new discoveries waiting to be explored. The Warhammer Classics initiative offers modern gamers the opportunity to delve into the titles that shaped our formative years, filling in the gaps in our gaming histories.

SNEG, the developer and publisher behind this initiative, assures fans that these classic games—some dating back to the 1990s—have been updated for compatibility with contemporary systems. This modernization is something I’ve longed for, especially when reminiscing about the thrill of wielding a Pulse Rifle in my younger days.

“Warhammer Classics is more than a collection of re-releases,” states SNEG director Klapovskiy in a recent press release. “It’s a clear statement of intent: that Warhammer’s foundational games matter, and that they are worth preserving, celebrated, and reintroduced to a global PC audience.”

In an era where many titles are being delisted, the importance of preservation cannot be overstated. With Warhammer experiencing a resurgence in popularity—thanks in part to the pandemic fostering a renewed interest in hobbies—there’s no better time to reintroduce these classic games to a new generation of players. It’s a sobering thought that some newcomers may not have even been born when these games first graced the market.

As I glance through some reviews of Fire Warrior, a hint of apprehension creeps in regarding my return to this cherished shooter. However, even if it hasn’t withstood the test of time, I remain optimistic about uncovering new treasures among this impressive lineup of resurrected titles.
