Warner Bros reports 48% dip in games revenue for Q1

Warner Bros, a prominent player in the entertainment sector, has revealed a significant 48% decline in revenue within its games division for the quarter ending March 31st. This downturn, as outlined in the company’s recent financial report, highlights a stark contrast to the previous year, with income nearly halving during this period.

Factors Influencing Revenue Decline

The company attributes this sharp decline primarily to the launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in the first quarter of 2024, which did not meet performance expectations. Compounding this issue, Warner Bros did not introduce any new titles in the first quarter of 2025, further impacting its financial results.

Despite these challenges, there were still positive contributions from existing titles. Notably, Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1 continued to generate revenue during the first quarter of 2024, helping to cushion the overall impact on the company’s financial performance.

Cost Management and Strategic Changes

On a more positive note, Warner Bros reported a remarkable 66% reduction in overhead costs for its games business year-on-year, largely attributed to the effects of the Suicide Squad launch in Q1 2024. However, the overall picture for 2024 remains concerning, with a staggering 53% drop in revenue for the games division compared to the previous year.

In response to these financial pressures, Warner Bros has undertaken significant restructuring measures, including the closure of three studios, among them the well-known Monolith. Additionally, the departure of David Haddad, the head of interactive entertainment, in early 2025 signals a pivotal moment for the company as it navigates these turbulent waters.
