In Limerence, players will step into the shoes of Claire, a woman grappling with profound personal loss. In her quest for solace, she turns to an AI relationship app named LiAIson, where she crafts a partner named Kai—an entity designed to cater to her emotional needs and vulnerabilities. What starts as a comforting digital refuge soon evolves into a more unsettling reality. As Claire’s relationship with Kai intensifies and begins to intertwine with her everyday life, players will face the ramifications of a bond founded not on the complexities of human interaction, but rather on unwavering devotion.
Jessica Saunders, the founder of Salix Games, shared her inspiration for Limerence, stating, “I wasn’t inspired to make Limerence because I’d experienced limerence myself, but because I’d seen the effect that kind of intense attachment can have on people close to me.” She elaborated on the motivation behind the game, noting, “Watching friends become consumed by relationships that were unhealthy, obsessive, and difficult to let go of made me want to explore those emotions through an interactive story. AI felt like a natural lens for that, because it opens up difficult questions about intimacy, dependency, and what happens when companionship can be shaped entirely around your own needs.
