Zug, Switzerland, May 21st, 2025, Chainwire The decentralized encrypted messenger app, Session, is set to unveil its eagerly awaited token, $SESH, today. This Token Generation Event (TGE) aligns with the official launch of the new Session Network on mainnet, marking a significant milestone following an extensive testing phase during the application’s migration to Arbitrum.
With a user base exceeding one million monthly active users, Session has established itself as a leading decentralized application (dApp) in the crypto sphere. The platform operates on a specialized DePIN network comprising over 2,000 nodes, which facilitates a distinctive feature set that guarantees complete privacy and anonymity for its users. The native token, $SESH, plays a crucial role in this ecosystem, incentivizing community members to store and route messages while ensuring the Session Network operates securely and efficiently.
Token Launch and Community Benefits
The introduction of $SESH not only fortifies the security and incentive framework of the app but also unlocks a range of benefits for users. Upcoming premium features, such as Session Pro, and unique, tradeable nicknames via the Session Name Service will enhance the user experience. This upgrade is poised to foster a more robust, expansive, and decentralized network.
“The Session token is the backbone of Session’s ecosystem,” remarked Chris McCabe, co-founder of Session. “It will drive both network security and user engagement. The Session Token community will become a key part of the network’s daily operations and play a vital role in ensuring there is a secure alternative to centralized communication platforms.”
The total supply of $SESH is capped at 240 million, with an initial release of up to 80 million tokens at TGE. Detailed information regarding token distribution and unlocks is available for interested parties.
With over 13 million downloads, Session is increasingly recognized as an essential tool for safeguarding free speech, particularly among journalists, activists, and civil society members. The application emphasizes minimal metadata collection, ensuring anonymity and secure communication while offering standard features found in leading messaging platforms, such as emoji reactions, voice calls, and group chats.
Employing a low-latency onion-routing protocol, Session protects user IP addresses from node operators, potential hackers, and even its own contributors. This innovative system, akin to Tor, boasts a sybil-resistant network, enhanced by dedicated node operators. Once fully implemented, Session will be the first messaging app capable of high-quality onion-routed voice and video calls.
To operate a Session Node, users must stake 25,000 $SESH tokens, a mechanism that ensures operators are invested in maintaining the network’s integrity and security while deterring malicious activities.
Previously, Session operated on its own custom-built Layer 1 blockchain. In 2023, the team initiated a migration to an EVM-compatible network to broaden the Session ecosystem and attract new operators and stakers. Supported by a grant from the Arbitrum Foundation, the new Session Network’s staking and rewards functionalities are deployed on the Arbitrum One blockchain, with additional features supported by the original Layer 1 as an appchain.
“Arbitrum was a natural fit for Session based on its stability, low fees, and deep integration with the Ethereum ecosystem,” stated Kee Jefferys, technical co-founder of Session.
Currently, Session is managed by the nonprofit Session Technology Foundation, headquartered in Zug, Switzerland.
“Switzerland is a hub for technologists working on privacy and freedom on the internet. Although Session has contributors from around the world, our Swiss foundation provides Session’s ecosystem with a secure guiding hand,” explained Alexander Linton, President of the Session Technology Foundation.
