Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp to work better with other chat apps

In November 2022, the European Commission implemented the Digital Markets Act, a pivotal regulation designed to foster fair competition within the digital landscape by curbing the dominance of large platforms. A key focus of this legislation is the interoperability of messaging services, compelling major players like Meta’s Messenger and WhatsApp to collaborate with other messaging platforms.

Meta’s Commitment to Interoperability

Recently, Meta has unveiled additional insights into its strategy for adhering to the Digital Markets Act. In a comprehensive blog post, the company outlined three significant features that will enhance the user experience for third-party chats on Messenger and WhatsApp.

  • Notification of New Platforms: Users will receive alerts whenever a new third-party messaging platform becomes compatible with Messenger and WhatsApp. This proactive approach ensures that users can seamlessly connect with contacts across different platforms as soon as they become available.
  • Chat Management Options: To streamline user experience, both platforms will allow individuals to organize their chats by offering the choice to keep conversations from third-party services in a separate folder or alongside first-party chats. This feature aims to enhance chat management and accessibility.
  • Enhanced Messaging Features: Meta is committed to exceeding the fundamental requirements set forth by the Digital Markets Act. Messenger and WhatsApp will incorporate advanced messaging functionalities, such as read receipts, typing indicators, replies, and reactions, when interacting with third-party services. Looking ahead, the company plans to introduce group creation capabilities in 2025 and voice and video calling features by 2027, further enriching the interoperability experience.

Through these initiatives, Meta is positioning itself not only to comply with regulatory demands but also to elevate the overall messaging experience for its users, fostering a more interconnected digital communication environment.
