Facebook to Retire its Messenger.com Web App April

Facebook has announced plans to phase out its Messenger.com web application in April, following the recent discontinuation of its desktop applications for both Windows and macOS. This decision, highlighted in a support page discovered by the French website Numerama, encourages users to transition to the main Facebook platform, which features a dedicated messaging section accessible at facebook.com/messages.

Transitioning to Facebook’s Main Platform

In the wake of Messenger.com’s retirement, users will be automatically redirected to facebook.com/messages for their messaging needs on a computer. This change allows individuals to continue their conversations seamlessly, either through the web interface or via the Messenger mobile app. For those who utilize Messenger without a Facebook account, the mobile app will remain the primary avenue for communication.

It is important to note that this shift will predominantly impact users within the European Economic Area (EEA) who have been using Messenger independently of a Facebook account. Following the transition, these users will find that their only option for messaging will be the Messenger mobile application.

For EEA users, maintaining a Messenger account without a Facebook profile can provide a more private means of communication with other Facebook users. The platform continues to uphold end-to-end encryption for conversations, and users can establish Messenger accounts using just an email address, bypassing the need to provide a phone number. However, it is worth mentioning that certain social features, such as channels, Community Chats, and Stories, will not be available for those using Messenger without a Facebook account.

While Facebook Messenger boasts billions of users, it shares the messaging landscape with WhatsApp, another Meta-owned application that also prioritizes end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp distinguishes itself with robust desktop applications and a web interface that recently expanded to include voice and video calling capabilities.
