Kakao rolls back KakaoTalk revamp amid user complaints

Kakao Corp. has announced a significant pivot in response to user feedback regarding its recent redesign of the KakaoTalk messenger. Following a wave of complaints about the new “feed-style” interface, which many users felt compromised their privacy and transformed the app into an unwelcome social network, the company will revert part of the update. The “friends” tab will return to its previous format, allowing users to select between the old and new display styles.

Last week, Kakao introduced the most extensive revamp of its app in 15 years, but the response was overwhelmingly negative. Users expressed concerns that the new design made KakaoTalk resemble Instagram, leading to claims that the messenger had “lost its identity.” This sentiment was particularly strong among those who rely on the app for both personal and professional communication, with many deeming the interface “intrusive.”

A Kakao official explained the rationale behind the redesign: “The feed-style design was intended to make it easier to browse friends’ photos and status updates without clicking into each profile. We are not removing the option, but will provide both choices.” However, the implementation of this dual-display feature will require a technical update, which is expected to roll out in the fourth quarter.

In addition to the interface changes, Kakao is also taking steps to enhance the safety features for minors using its short-form video function, responding to parental calls for stronger protective measures. “We will continue to improve user experience and interface design, while actively reflecting feedback to make KakaoTalk more convenient,” the company stated.

In the wake of these announcements, Kakao’s shares experienced a modest recovery, closing at 60,300 won () on the Korea Exchange, marking a 1.69 percent increase. This uptick comes as the company seeks to regain user trust and stabilize its market position following last week’s declines.
