Zillow adds in-app messaging to chat with ‘co-shoppers’

Enhancing Collaboration in Homebuying

Zillow has introduced an innovative messaging feature within its app, designed to facilitate communication among homebuyers and their “co-shoppers.” This new functionality allows users to engage in conversations and share listings seamlessly, aiming to streamline the often complex homebuying process.

According to Zillow leaders, the primary goal of this feature is to minimize confusion and prevent missed messages by consolidating discussions about listings into a single, dedicated channel. David Beitel, the chief technology officer at Zillow, emphasized the importance of this development: “This new messaging product brings the collaboration that already happens across text messages directly into Zillow. It’s another step toward making the home journey simpler and more connected. We’re continuing to bring more of the experience onto Zillow so buyers can move from browsing to closing with less friction and more confidence.”

Statistics reveal that over 60% of homebuyers engage in the search process alongside at least one other individual. With the new chat feature, users can invite partners, roommates, or friends to join their in-app inbox, enabling them to coordinate their property search more effectively.

In addition to the messaging feature, Zillow’s fall product launch has unveiled several other enhancements:

  • Virtual staging: An AI-powered capability available on Zillow Showcase listings, allowing users to visualize empty rooms in various styles, including modern and Scandinavian.
  • Zillow Home Loans verified pre-approval: A digital process designed to help buyers verify their information and expedite their mortgage readiness.
  • Closing dashboard: Developed in collaboration with Spruce, this feature enables buyers to track title and escrow tasks in a secure, centralized location.
  • Rentals AI assist: Powered by EliseAI, this tool offers renters 24/7 automated responses regarding property details, tours, and availability.

These enhancements, including the messaging feature, are now available through the Zillow app, reflecting the company’s commitment to improving the homebuying experience.
