A native Android Apple TV app is now in the Google Play store

After five years of anticipation, the Apple TV app has finally made its debut on Android devices, marking a significant milestone for Apple in expanding its streaming service. This new version, meticulously crafted for seamless integration with the Android ecosystem, is now available in the Google Play Store. Users with Android OS 10 or later can now subscribe to Apple TV+ and enjoy a rich library of content, including acclaimed shows and films such as Severance, Silo, Killers of the Flower Moon, and CODA. Notably, pricing remains consistent across both platforms.

Enhanced User Experience Across Platforms

The introduction of this app promises to enhance user experience through features that allow for smooth interactivity across devices. For instance, the Continue Watching feature will track viewing progress, enabling users to pick up right where they left off, regardless of the device in use. Additionally, the Watchlist will synchronize across all devices, ensuring that users have access to their favorite content at their fingertips. Purchases linked to an Apple account will also be accessible, allowing for a unified viewing experience.

However, it’s worth noting that the ability to cast Apple TV content from an Android device will not be available at launch, which may be a consideration for some users.

During a recent demonstration, the app showcased its striking resemblance to the Apple experience, whether on an Android phone or tablet. The interface features dedicated tabs for Apple TV+, MLS, Downloads, and Search. Users can scroll through sections highlighting Continue Watching, trending shows and movies, and a curated selection of top Apple original productions tailored for new subscribers. On tablets, the layout will adapt to screen size, with navigation options accessible via a hamburger menu located at the top left.

MLS Season Pass Integration

In addition to its extensive library of films and series, the app will also include the MLS Season Pass. Users can look forward to a featured match of the week under the banner of Sunday Night Soccer, along with dedicated pages for upcoming matches that provide details and links to soccer club pages. Fans will have the option to favorite their teams, allowing for a personalized experience in a designated Supporters’ Section.

For those using Google OS TVs, such as the TCL QM8, Sony Bravia 9, and Hisense U8N, the existing Apple TV app will receive integrated Google Play billing, although it will not be a new app. User feedback in the Google Play Store indicates a positive reception for this long-awaited addition, especially considering the previous app’s performance, which, despite over 50 million downloads, garnered a disappointing rating of only 1.6 stars.
