Beginning August 20, Android users will find themselves without access to the Amazon Appstore, as the company has announced a significant shift in its digital strategy. Developers received notification that the submission of new applications to the store will cease, marking a pivotal change in Amazon’s approach to app distribution on the Android platform.
Changes to Amazon Coins Program
In conjunction with this transition, Amazon will also be discontinuing its Amazon Coins program, effective August 20, 2025. This digital currency was designed to facilitate the purchase of apps, games, and in-app items within the Amazon Appstore. Customers are encouraged to utilize any remaining Amazon Coins in their accounts before the cutoff date, which can be easily accessed from the home page of the Appstore. For those who do not spend their coins by the deadline, Amazon has assured users that any unspent balance will be refunded.
A spokesperson for Amazon explained that the decision to terminate the Appstore on Android stems from a lack of engagement, stating that a very small number of customers utilize the platform for app downloads. Instead, the company aims to concentrate its resources on enhancing the Appstore experience on its own devices, such as Fire TV and Fire Tablets, where the majority of customer interactions currently occur.
“We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it,” the spokesperson elaborated, highlighting a strategic pivot towards optimizing user experience on proprietary platforms.
