Amazon has announced the impending closure of its Android app store, set to take effect on August 20, 2025. Developers received notifications indicating that they will no longer be able to submit new applications to the platform as the date approaches.
Details of the Shutdown
The notification on Amazon’s support page clearly states, “Starting 20th August 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device.” Additionally, the company will discontinue its Amazon Coins program on the same date, with no new purchases available after February 20, 2025. This digital currency has allowed users to buy games and applications within the app store.
For customers holding Amazon Coins, the company has assured that any remaining balance will be refunded following the shutdown. However, the Amazon Appstore will still be operational on Amazon’s own devices, such as Fire TV and Fire Tablets, ensuring that users can continue to access applications through those platforms.
According to a report from TechCrunch, the app store has seen limited use among customers on non-Amazon devices, prompting the decision to refocus efforts. An Amazon spokesperson elaborated, stating, “We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it.”
