Android 16 Beta 3 achieves ‘Platform Stability,’ brings extended Auracast support

What you need to know

  • Google has unveiled Android 16 Beta 3, which introduces a suite of accessibility tools designed to enhance user experience.
  • A standout feature, Text Outline, aims to assist low-vision users by providing a more comfortable reading experience.
  • The update also includes Local Network Protection, empowering users with greater control over app access to their devices.
  • Additionally, the beta expands Auracast compatibility, particularly benefiting hearing aid users by facilitating better engagement during public events.

In a significant step towards refining its mobile operating system, Google has rolled out the latest beta version of Android 16, marking the third iteration of this anticipated update. Officially released on March 13, the company announced that Android 16 Beta 3 has reached the “Platform Stability” milestone, making it accessible to all enrolled users, including those with Pixel devices.

The inclusion of Auracast support is particularly noteworthy, as it enables audio broadcasting from a single source to multiple receivers. This feature is designed to enhance accessibility, especially for individuals using hearing aids and earbuds. For instance, in bustling environments like train stations or concert venues, users often struggle to catch important announcements amid the surrounding noise. With Auracast, they can connect directly to broadcasts from compatible devices, such as TV streamers, ensuring they receive clear audio streams directly to their hearing aids. This capability also allows for personalized audio experiences tailored to individual preferences.

It is essential to highlight that only LE audio-compatible hearing aids from manufacturers like GN Hearing and Starkey will be supported in this rollout. Furthermore, Samsung Galaxy devices equipped with One UI 7 (Android 15) and Pixel 9 devices running the Android 16 beta can seamlessly connect to public audio streams.

To simplify access to these streams, Google has collaborated on a QR code standard, enabling users to connect to broadcasts without navigating through settings. Notably, Pixel 9 users will have priority access to this QR code functionality.

As the company approaches the final stages before the public release of Android 16, anticipated for late June, there may be additional beta versions introduced. Google has expressed its commitment to collaborating with device partners to ensure a broad rollout of the Q2 release across various devices.
