Android 16 will make it easier to find your recent apps with a new taskbar overflow feature

In a bid to enhance user experience on tablets, Google is set to roll out a significant update with Android 16, introducing a taskbar overflow button aimed at streamlining app switching. This feature is particularly beneficial for users who frequently juggle multiple applications, as it provides a more organized way to navigate through recently opened apps.

Enhancements to the Taskbar

Since the introduction of the taskbar in 2021, Google has continuously refined its functionality. The taskbar now includes an app drawer, a more compact design, and a display of recently opened applications. However, as users open more apps, the taskbar can become cluttered, making it challenging to locate the desired application quickly.

The forthcoming taskbar overflow button addresses this issue by offering a visually appealing solution. When activated, this button will unveil a horizontally scrolling carousel showcasing previews of recent apps, allowing users to find what they need without sifting through a crowded taskbar.

While Google has yet to provide specific details on how users will access this new feature, preliminary images suggest a gray, circular button positioned after the divider that separates pinned apps from recently used ones. This design aligns with previous iterations, indicating its role as the gateway to the overflow menu.

Interestingly, the taskbar overflow’s functionality bears resemblance to the familiar Alt + Tab switcher, leading to speculation about its potential to eventually replace the traditional app-switching method. However, confirmation of this will require an official announcement or hands-on testing with the feature.

Set to debut later this year, the taskbar overflow feature will be included in either the Android 16 QPR1 or QPR2 release. While there is no information yet regarding the introduction of a similar taskbar for smartphones, it is anticipated that this new feature will complement Android’s upcoming Desktop Mode for mobile devices.
