In a noteworthy development for users of Android Auto, Google has begun to incorporate its Material You design language into the platform, enhancing the visual experience with vibrant accent colors. The rollout of Android Auto version 13.4 is now underway, bringing with it a fresh wave of color that aligns with the user’s phone settings.
During testing on a Pixel 9 Pro Fold, it became evident that Google is applying these new accent colors to various system elements, including buttons, toggles, and the backgrounds of cards and menus. Previously, this feature was limited to music applications, which adapted their UI elements to reflect album artwork. However, the latest update extends this functionality across the entire system interface, although it does not yet apply to third-party apps within Android Auto.
Users can observe these changes prominently in the Settings menu, notifications, and the notification center. To fully experience the new color scheme, it is essential to enable the setting that allows the matching of the phone’s wallpaper.
However, the implementation of these colors appears to be a work in progress. Users have reported inconsistencies, with some colors not updating in real-time when changes are made on their phones. In certain instances, a force stop of the Android Auto app and a reconnection are necessary to see the new colors take effect.
As Google continues to refine this feature, users are encouraged to share their experiences and observations regarding these updates in their vehicles.
