Android Auto gets video and browser apps ‘soon,’ more weather apps finally coming

Google has announced an exciting expansion for Android Auto, set to enhance the user experience with a broader selection of applications. Among the notable additions are weather apps, which will soon be more widely accessible, alongside the anticipated introduction of video and browser applications.

Historically, Android Auto has maintained a somewhat stringent approach to app availability, requiring each application to undergo a rigorous approval process and conform to specific categories. However, in recent years, Google has been progressively loosening these restrictions, paving the way for a more diverse app ecosystem.

During the I/O 2025 event, Google unveiled plans to introduce two new app categories to Android Auto in the near future: browser apps and video apps. The latter will be compatible with phones running Android 16, although users should note that these video applications will only function in select vehicles and while parked, ensuring safety remains a priority.

Video apps will be supported on Android Auto, starting with phones running Android 16 on select compatible cars. If your app is already adaptive, enabling your app experience while parked only requires minimal steps to distribute to cars.

In addition to the new app categories, Google has announced that weather apps have officially “graduated from beta” status on both Android Auto and Android Automotive. Developers can now publish weather applications without the need for additional approval, provided they adhere to established quality guidelines. This change marks a significant shift, as developers can expect a surge of weather apps to become available for users.

The Weather app category has graduated from beta: any developer can now publish weather apps to production tracks on both Android Auto and cars with Google Built-in. Before you publish your app, check that it meets the quality guidelines for weather apps.

With these developments, the landscape of Android Auto is set to evolve, offering drivers a richer and more versatile digital experience on the road.
