Android Automotive is poised to enhance user privacy with the introduction of a new app lock feature. This development aims to provide a more secure environment for the in-car operating system, allowing users to safeguard their personal information from inquisitive passengers.
Android Automotive’s new app lock feature will require a PIN to unlock apps
Currently, Android Automotive users can lock their profiles to prevent unauthorized access to their apps. However, this approach presents a challenge when passengers need to access specific applications, such as for navigation. Once a profile is unlocked for this purpose, it inadvertently grants access to all other apps, raising privacy concerns.
In response to this issue, Google is developing a per-app lock feature that will allow users to secure individual applications with a PIN. According to recent updates from Android Authority, this functionality will enable users to lock specific apps, ensuring that only those with the correct PIN can access them. This mechanism mirrors the existing security protocols for unlocking Android devices and profiles.
The new app lock feature will support PINs ranging from a minimum of four digits to a maximum of sixteen, offering users flexibility in their security preferences. However, the timeline for the rollout remains unclear, as the feature is categorized as an unbundled app rather than a native operating system component. Consequently, car manufacturers will need to ensure compatibility and functionality within their vehicles before the feature becomes widely available.
