Android’s Weather ‘app’ is going away, and what’s left behind is disappointing

The Pixel Weather app, which debuted in 2024, has earned accolades for its visually appealing design, making it a standout among weather applications on Android devices. While this app remains exclusive to Pixel users, Google has previously extended a semblance of this visual experience to other Android devices through a full-screen weather report page. However, a shift is underway as Google begins to phase out this immersive interface in favor of a more conventional approach.

Transition to a Simplified Weather Experience

Recent reports from 9to5Google indicate that the once vibrant full-screen weather interface on Android devices is being replaced by a standard web search result. Users tapping the Weather icon will now be greeted with a more basic and less engaging weather report, steering them away from the visually rich experience that many have come to appreciate.

This transition appears to have started several months ago, but its impact is becoming increasingly noticeable across the Android user base. Unlike the dedicated Pixel Weather app, which provides a comprehensive weather experience, other Android users have relied on a shortcut that is essentially a feature of the Google app itself.

With this update, the shortcut now leads users to a Google search for the term “weather,” rather than directing them to the previous dedicated weather report page. The former interface elegantly separated sections for current conditions, hourly forecasts, and 10-day predictions. In contrast, the new design consolidates current and hourly weather predictions into a single card, accompanied by a carousel displaying the upcoming 10-day forecast. While Google’s charming mascot, Froggy, retains a small presence on the card, many of the detailed graphics—such as those representing humidity, wind, and precipitation—have been simplified into basic icons.
