Apple TV app update brings Google Cast support on Android

In a significant enhancement for users of the Apple TV app on Android devices, the latest update has introduced Google Cast support, effectively bridging a notable gap in functionality since the app’s debut earlier this year.

New Features and Interface Improvements

Upon updating, users will notice the Google Cast icon positioned conveniently to the left of their profile avatar in the top-right corner. This feature opens a “Cast To” bottom sheet, which has been designed to harmonize with the overall aesthetic of the app.

Additionally, the Cast button is accessible within the fullscreen player, situated next to the mute option. When casting, users are greeted with a sleek miniplayer that displays essential playback information, device details, and a timeline. The interface also includes controls for 10-second rewind and play/pause, enhancing the viewing experience.

For those who prefer a more immersive experience, tapping the Cast icon reveals a fullscreen portrait player equipped with large buttons for rewind, forward, and play/pause, along with a scrubber for easy navigation. The cover art showcases the poster of the show or movie, and a simple swipe down returns users to the home screen.

The absence of Google Cast support was a noticeable shortcoming at launch, prompting Apple to roll out updates since February, which included features like new episode notifications. In this latest version, Apple has also refined the homescreen icon, making it slightly smaller within its circular frame. Version 2.2 of the Apple TV app for Android is currently being distributed via the Play Store.
