Gemini app bug removes features, reverts UI on Android

A recent bug within the Gemini app has led to the retraction of several features that users had come to rely on. This unexpected turn of events has prompted a noticeable shift in the app’s functionality.

Feature Rollbacks and Interface Changes

One of the most significant changes is the removal of the ability to upload NotebookLM notebooks via the ‘plus’ menu in the prompt box. Users will now find that the design has reverted from a list format to side-by-side pills, which may affect usability for some.

In addition, the “Temporary chat” button, previously located in the top-right corner next to user avatars, has vanished. Furthermore, the option to “Import memory to Gemini” has also been removed from the profile menu, leaving users with fewer tools at their disposal.

Fortunately, Gemini’s web platform, accessible at Gemini.google.com, remains unaffected and continues to offer a robust mobile and Progressive Web App experience for those in need of these features.

Other interface adjustments include a shift in the background color from black back to gray, resulting in the suggested action pills losing their outlines. This change may alter the visual experience for users navigating the app.

Outside of the Gemini app, Android users have noticed that the overlay has reverted to its previous design, which does not provide full access to the Tools menu. The fullscreen glow effect has also been removed, leaving only the overlay highlighted.

This bug appears to be affecting Android users across both stable and beta channels with Google app version 17.14, and it has been prevalent over the past day. Google is expected to address these issues with a server-side fix in the near future, aiming to restore the lost functionalities that users have come to appreciate.
