Google is enhancing the functionality of Android Auto by integrating its Personal Intelligence feature, allowing the Gemini assistant to provide answers using information from various connected applications. This innovative update, which commenced its rollout on October 20, aims to streamline the user experience by enabling the assistant to access details from emails or even identify locations based on photos.
Connected apps supply context without another long spoken explanation
The new feature, with user permission, can tap into Google Workspace applications such as Gmail and Calendar, along with Photos, Maps, YouTube, and Search. Google envisions an assistant that not only retrieves information but also synthesizes it to effectively respond to user inquiries.
For instance, users can ask about their flight gate status or whether a flight is on time, or they can request directions to a doctor’s appointment without needing to specify the address. Another practical application allows users to utilize a recently taken photo to locate a nearby car wash. These scenarios illustrate the intended capabilities of the feature, although they are not derived from real-world testing.
This enhancement marks a significant shift, as it allows for the provision of personal context through connected services, eliminating the need for users to repeat information for each query.
Your existing Gemini preferences determine which information travels with you
The integration of connected apps is entirely optional. Google clarifies that these applications will not be linked until users actively enable Personal Intelligence, and it can be disabled at any time through the Gemini settings. For those who have already activated it within the Gemini app, their preferences will seamlessly transfer to the car environment.
Drivers opting not to enable this feature can still utilize navigation, music, calls, and general inquiries, albeit without the personalized responses that come with the connected services. In the forthcoming rollout for vehicles equipped with Google built-in, personal responses will only be shared when the user’s phone is connected to the car.
Beyond Android Auto, Google is also expanding Gemini’s personalized workflows, transitioning from Gems to skills. The immediate focus within Android Auto is on enhancing the user experience through connected personal information and voice requests.
