Transition to Gemini: The Evolution of Google’s Voice Assistant
As September unfolds, Google has initiated the gradual phasing out of its Google Assistant on mobile devices, a transition that appears to be gaining momentum. Over recent weeks, the tech giant has been migrating users to its new voice assistant, Gemini, a process that was initially slated for completion by 2025 but has since been extended to 2026. In early August, Google provided clarity on the final timeline for this significant shift.
Reports from users across the United States and Europe indicate that the migration is now in full swing. The Google Assistant has been completely removed from all devices and accounts that have been checked, marking a notable change in the user experience.
One of the most significant alterations is the removal of the “Switch to Google Assistant” option from the Gemini app. This feature, which previously allowed users to revert back to the older assistant, has vanished from the account menu in the latest versions of the Google app, specifically 17.60 stable and 17.62 beta.
As a result, users can no longer access or switch back to Google Assistant on their mobile devices, tablets, or any paired devices, including Wear OS, headphones, and Android Auto. This marks a definitive step towards the full integration of Gemini as the primary voice assistant.
However, it is worth noting that there have been no immediate changes to Google Assistant on smart speakers and displays, such as Google Nest and Google Home. These devices continue to operate under the existing framework, providing users with a familiar experience while the transition to Gemini unfolds on mobile platforms.
With this shift, Gemini is now positioned as the primary voice assistant experience on Android devices, activated through a long press of the power button or a swipe from the corners of the screen. As Google continues to refine and expand its offerings, users can expect further developments in the capabilities and functionalities of Gemini in the coming months.
