Gemini Live rolling out Astra camera, screen sharing to more Android users

Astra’s Live Features Expand for Gemini App Users

As of Thursday afternoon (PT), a growing number of Android users of the Gemini app are beginning to experience the innovative capabilities of Astra’s Live camera and screen sharing features. This rollout, which Google initially announced for March, has seen its first live reports emerge over the past two weeks. On Saturday, Google reassured users that it is diligently working to extend availability to a broader audience.

Recent updates indicate that Astra is now operational on two Pixel phones across different Google Accounts in both the US and Europe. However, it is noteworthy that these features are not yet visible on other devices linked to the same accounts. This gradual rollout suggests that while progress is being made, there remains a significant number of users awaiting access.

Once the features are activated on a device, users may encounter a prompt within the Gemini app inviting them to “Share your camera or screen with Gemini Live.” Google describes this functionality as a means to facilitate discussions, enhance learning about one’s surroundings, or provide assistance with on-screen content.

To initiate Gemini Live, users can simply tap the newly introduced camera button located in the compact bottom row of the app. The option to switch to the front-facing camera is conveniently placed in a corner button. A helpful prompt advises users to maintain steady movements for optimal results, as the viewfinder must remain active for Gemini Live to function effectively.

Screen sharing can be accessed through the same fullscreen interface or by invoking the Gemini overlay from any location on the device and selecting “Share screen with Live.” Upon initiating this feature, a privacy prompt will confirm the user’s intent to “Share your screen with Google.” Following this, a system pill will appear in the status bar, displaying a live count alongside the time.

For those eager to check if Astra is available on their device, a simple troubleshooting step involves force-stopping the Gemini app before attempting to launch Live.
