Gemini overlay brings back shortcut to open full app on Android

Earlier this year, the Gemini overlay on Android underwent a significant change, but now it is making a return with a new feature that enhances user accessibility. The latest update introduces a convenient shortcut that allows users to swiftly open the full Gemini app.

This new functionality takes the form of a drag handle positioned at the top of the Gemini overlay. Users can simply swipe up and release to access the Gemini app, where they can find their chat history, Gems, and settings all in one place.

The updated prompt bar provides seamless access to various features, including Video, Deep Research, and Canvas chips. While the ‘plus’ menu remains unchanged in terms of functionality, its design has been refreshed. Notably, last week, Gemini on the web introduced an “Image: Generate with Imagen” chip, although this feature has yet to make its way to mobile devices.

The most recent update to the overlay occurred in January, when the previous design was notably taller. This new shortcut eliminates the need for users to place the app icon on their home screens, streamlining the user experience.

This overlay shortcut is currently being rolled out widely with version 16.27 (stable) and 16.28 (beta) of the Google app. For those who have not yet seen the update, a simple force stop of the app may be required to activate the new feature.

In addition to these enhancements, the Gemini overlay has also adapted to accommodate right-alignment on tablets and foldables, coinciding with the launch of Samsung’s latest devices. Meanwhile, anticipation builds as users await the broader rollout of the four-color glow feature.
