The latest update to the Gemini overlay on Android introduces a multitasking feature designed to enhance user experience. With the addition of a “Minimize” button, users can now conveniently reduce the overlay into a floating bubble shortcut, allowing for seamless multitasking.
Upon entering a prompt, the Gemini overlay presents a centered “Minimize” button above the container. Following the generation of a response, a pill-shaped container appears on the right side. This functionality collapses the overlay into a compact bubble adorned with the spark logo. Google elaborates on this feature: “Gemini is still available while you multitask. Tap to expand. Drag to move or dismiss.”
However, it’s worth noting that the Gemini bubble is anchored to one of six predetermined positions, limiting its placement flexibility. Additionally, users have reported a bug that resets the bubble to the bottom-right corner each time it is minimized.
Once the response is ready, tapping outside the sheet restores the bubble. Users can also utilize the system back gesture to close the entire overlay or simply drag to dismiss it. This new shortcut offers a more efficient alternative to navigating through the Gemini app and side panel to resume a conversation. It allows users to ask a question and minimize the overlay to attend to other tasks without waiting for a response.
For those seeking an even richer experience, Android 17’s system Bubble option can be employed alongside the Gemini app.
The rollout of the Minimize button and Gemini bubble is now underway for Android users, promising to streamline multitasking and enhance overall usability.
