Goodbye, Samsung Messages: Google Messages to be new default on Galaxy phones

Ditching Samsung Messages: A premature move in the RCS era?

Many Android phones come with Google Messages as the default messaging app, but Samsung has always stuck with its own Messages app. However, recent reports suggest that Samsung is making a change, opting for Google Messages as the new preloaded messaging app on Galaxy phones. This change will affect devices like the Galaxy Z Flip 6, Z Fold 6, and newer models, with users still having the option to download Samsung Messages from the Galaxy Store, although some features may be excluded.

Interestingly, this shift seems to only impact devices in the US for now, as Canadian and European Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 builds still have Samsung Messages as the default app. This decision by Samsung comes at a time when Google Messages has been criticized for heavily compressing images sent via RCS, compared to Samsung Messages which can send uncompressed images. However, there are indications that Google is working on addressing this issue in the near future.

It raises the question of whether Samsung’s move to switch to Google Messages as the default app is premature, especially considering the ongoing developments in the RCS messaging space. It remains to be seen how this change will impact users and their messaging experience. We have reached out to Samsung for more information on this decision and will update as soon as we hear back.
