The transition from the legacy Google Assistant to the new Gemini chatbot marks a significant shift in Google’s approach to personal assistance technology. According to a report from 9to5Google, users of the Google Assistant have begun receiving notifications regarding the app’s impending discontinuation on Android and Wear OS devices, effective September 4.
Gemini Takes the Lead
Originally, Google had intended for Gemini to replace the legacy Assistant on Android devices last year. However, the rollout faced delays as the company focused on developing tailored Gemini experiences for various device types. Currently, there are dedicated versions of Gemini for connected speakers and Google TV, enhancing user interaction across different platforms.
In an email to users, Google expressed its commitment to ensuring a seamless transition, stating, “We are confident that Gemini will offer you an even more capable and helpful assistant experience.” This sentiment underscores the company’s aim to elevate user engagement through advanced technology.
For those still relying on the old Google Assistant, the mobile app will be phased out after September 4, leaving Gemini as the sole assistant experience on Android devices. Google clarified that the retirement process may extend over several weeks, during which users will gradually lose access to the legacy Assistant. “Once availability is removed, you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices,” the company detailed.
The legacy Assistant will also see its end on Wear OS smartwatches, headphones, and Android Auto following the September deadline. However, vehicles equipped with Google built-in, which operate on the company’s proprietary automotive operating system without needing a connected phone, will continue to support the Google Assistant until September 4, 2026. This extended availability highlights Google’s ongoing commitment to integrating its services within the automotive space.
