Google Docs is tapping into Gemini to whip up formatted documents

Google Docs is enhancing its suite of tools with an innovative feature known as “Help me create,” which harnesses the power of Gemini to facilitate the creation of formatted documents from scratch. This experimental addition aims to streamline the document creation process, making it more intuitive and user-friendly.

What you need to know

  • Google Docs is testing a new “Help me create” feature powered by Gemini, allowing you to create formatted docs from scratch.
  • You can easily integrate Google Drive files by typing “@” followed by the file name, pulling your content right into the doc.
  • While it pulls from Workspace files, it doesn’t keep the original layout or style and can’t generate images of people yet.

According to the support page for Google Docs, users can generate formatted documents directly from their Google Workspace files by simply typing “@” followed by the desired file name. This feature allows for a seamless integration of existing content into new documents, enhancing productivity.

However, it’s important to note that while the feature pulls in Workspace files, it does not retain the original layout or style. Additionally, the current iteration does not support the generation of inline or cover images of individuals. For optimal results, users are encouraged to employ natural, conversational language when crafting prompts.

Once activated, the “Help me create” prompt will appear at the top of the interface, positioned alongside familiar options such as meeting notes and polls. Alternatively, users can navigate to the “File” menu, select “New,” and choose the feature from the available options. From there, they can select the type of document they wish to create.

This latest enhancement is part of Google’s broader initiative to elevate productivity and creativity within its applications. It aligns with recent advancements in AI, including the capability to generate images within Google Docs using Gemini technology. Currently, the “Help me create” feature is exclusive to web users participating in the Gemini for Google Workspace Alpha and Workspace Labs programs. It is being gradually rolled out and is limited to new, blank documents.
