Google introduces a new video generation model as OpenAI shutters Sora app

Google continues to innovate in the realm of AI video generation, unveiling its latest model, Veo 3.1 Lite, tailored specifically for professional developers. This new offering allows users to incorporate video generation capabilities into their products, with pricing starting at a modest five cents per second for 720p video, complete with audio.

Details of Veo 3.1 Lite

In a recent blog post, Google emphasized that Veo 3.1 Lite strikes a balance between practical utility and professional-grade features. However, it’s important to note that this model is exclusively available to paying users of Google AI Studio, meaning it cannot be accessed through the Gemini app. For those who qualify, the pricing structure is as follows:

  • 720p video: 5 cents per second
  • 1080p video: 8 cents per second

Developers can create clips in both landscape (16:9) and portrait (9:16) formats, although the model does not support 4K video generation. The clip lengths are limited to four, six, or eight seconds, making them ideal for quick animations that can enhance website or app interfaces rather than full-length films.

Price Adjustments for Veo 3.1 Fast

In addition to the launch of Veo 3.1 Lite, Google has announced a price reduction for its existing Veo 3.1 Fast model, effective April 7. The updated pricing will be as follows:

  • 720p video: 10 cents per second (down from 15 cents)
  • 1080p video: 15 cents per second (down from 18 cents)
  • 4K video: 35 cents per second (also down by five cents)

This adjustment aims to make the Veo 3.1 Fast model more accessible to developers, further enhancing the suite of tools available within Google AI Studio. For those interested in exploring the full capabilities of the new model, comprehensive developer documentation is available for review.
