Google just gave you two new ways to find the right apps on the Play Store

Google has unveiled a series of enhancements aimed at transforming the app discovery experience within the Google Play Store. Central to these updates are the introduction of “spaces” and a new feature dubbed Guided Search, both designed to streamline the process of finding apps.

Enhanced App Discovery with Spaces

The revamped spaces feature will now occupy a prominent position at the top of the Apps tab, adjacent to sections like For You and Top Charts. These curated collections focus on specific themes, allowing users to explore apps tailored to their interests. Initially tested in India and Japan with dedicated hubs for cricket and comics, the spaces concept is now expanding globally.

For instance, in Korea, Google is launching an entertainment space that showcases a variety of media, including movies and short-form dramas. Meanwhile, U.S. users will have the opportunity to sample trending TV shows and movies directly from the Apps page, featuring content from platforms such as HBO Max and Peacock. Additionally, free web comic samples will be available in both the U.S. and Korea, following successful trials in Japan.

Guided Search: A New Way to Find Apps

While the spaces update is noteworthy, the introduction of Guided Search is particularly intriguing. Traditionally, searching for apps on the Play Store has been a mixed experience; users often find it challenging to locate apps based on general themes rather than specific names. Guided Search aims to address this issue by allowing users to input broader queries, such as “find a home” or “deck-building games.” In response, the feature will present results with enhanced visibility, including prominent headlines, descriptions, and categorized listings.

Powered by artificial intelligence, Guided Search results come with an “Organized with AI” label, distinguishing them from standard search results, which appear below under “All results.” While the integration of AI raises questions about accuracy, the potential for a more intuitive search experience is promising.

Both the spaces and Guided Search features are currently rolling out, though users may notice a staggered implementation. As is typical with Google updates, patience may be required before these enhancements become available on all devices.
