Google’s Messages app has undergone a significant transformation over the years, particularly with the integration of Rich Communication Services (RCS). This evolution has brought forth an array of engaging features, including Voice Moods and Selfie GIFs, enhancing the user experience. Until recently, however, the customization options for chat appearances were somewhat limited, primarily allowing users to change the color of their chat bubbles.
New Chat Themes Enhance Personalization
In a notable update, Google has introduced new chat themes that offer users the ability to completely revamp their conversation backgrounds. Users can now select from a variety of photos or even upload their own images to serve as a backdrop for their chats. This feature not only personalizes the chat experience but also adjusts the color of chat bubbles to harmonize with the chosen background.
While the new themes are a welcome addition, there is room for further innovation. A suggestion has emerged for Google to incorporate an on-device background generation feature, akin to Apple’s method of allowing users to describe or modify preloaded backgrounds with its AI capabilities. Such an enhancement could elevate the customization experience even further.
Another aspect worth considering is the synchronization of chat themes across devices. Currently, when a user applies a theme, it is visible only to them, as indicated by the message at the top stating, “only you will see these changes.” This approach, while understandable—given the potential for mismatched tastes between chat partners—limits the fun of shared experiences. In contrast, platforms like Apple Messages, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger allow users to sync backgrounds, leading to playful interactions and friendly “battles” over which theme to keep.
As one user aptly noted, the thrill of swapping backgrounds and observing how long it takes for someone to notice could add an exciting layer to conversations. A potential solution could involve a toggle feature that permits the user changing the background to sync their choice across devices, while giving the recipient the option to either retain it or select their own without reverting back.
However, amidst these enhancements, some users have reported a peculiar bug within the Google Messages app. When tapping on a theme without applying it and then exiting back to the chat, the app may freeze. While a complete exit from the app resolves the issue, it has been noted inconsistently among users. Some, like my colleague Nick Sutrich, have experienced this glitch, while others have not. Interestingly, a prompt appears for some users when attempting to leave the page without saving changes, which only seems to occur under specific conditions, such as resetting the background to default.
As Google continues to refine its Messages app, these insights and suggestions could pave the way for an even more engaging and user-friendly messaging experience.
