Google removes an often used tab from its Android phone app but don’t worry

In a recent update to the Phone by Google app, users may notice a shift in how they access their frequently dialed contacts. The familiar Favorites tab, once located at the bottom of the screen, has been replaced with a new design element that places the word “Favorites” prominently at the top of the interface, accompanied by an arrow indicating its functionality.

New Design Enhancements

For those enrolled in the app’s beta program, tapping the down arrow reveals a selection of five favorite contacts, along with a convenient button to add new favorites to the list. This redesign not only streamlines the user experience but also optimizes the layout, providing more space for the Recents, Contacts, and Voicemail tabs. The Floating Action Button (FAB) for the dial pad is now more accessible, enhancing usability.

The update is currently visible on devices like the Pixel 6 Pro running the latest Android 16 QPR1 Beta, specifically version 182.0.779772896-publicbeta. Users who do not see the new feature may simply be awaiting a server-side rollout from Google, which can take some time to reach all users.

To check the current version of the Phone by Google app, Pixel users can navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps, locate the Phone app, and scroll to the bottom of the App info page. This ongoing refinement of the Android user interface reflects Google’s commitment to reducing clutter and enhancing the intuitiveness of its operating system.
