Google rolls out new AI-powered scam detection feature in Messages app

Google Messages has unveiled an exciting array of features tailored for Android and Pixel users, with a particular emphasis on enhancing user safety and connectivity. Among the standout innovations is an AI-driven scam detection tool, a timely response to the escalating threat of cyber scams. In a recent blog post, Google articulated its commitment to user security, stating, “Today (March 4), we’re sharing four new Android features that are designed to keep you connected and make life easier.”

AI-powered scam detection

In light of the increasing prevalence of cyber scams, Google’s new feature aims to provide users with a safeguard against deceptive practices. The Scam Detection tool actively scrutinizes SMS, MMS, and RCS messages in real time, identifying suspicious patterns that may indicate a scam. When a potential threat is detected, users receive a prompt alert, offering them the choice to dismiss the message, report it, or block the sender. This feature is particularly focused on combatting conversational scams that often begin innocently but can lead to fraudulent activities.

Initially available in English, the Scam Detection feature will roll out first in the US, UK, and Canada, with plans for broader international availability. It is enabled by default and specifically monitors messages from unknown contacts, ensuring that personal conversations remain untouched. Google underscores that all analysis occurs directly on the device, prioritizing user privacy. For those who prefer not to use this feature, it can be easily disabled in the Spam Protection settings of Google Messages.

Share live location

In a move to enhance user convenience, Google Messages now incorporates a live location-sharing feature, akin to that of WhatsApp. This functionality, integrated into the Find My Device app, allows users to share their real-time location with trusted contacts, thereby bolstering safety during meetups or travel. The feature provides a comprehensive map view, displaying the locations of friends regardless of their device type. Google assures users that location data is securely managed, granting them full control over who can access their location and for what duration. Regular reminders keep users informed about their active location-sharing connections.

Exclusive for Google Pixel

For Pixel device enthusiasts, Google is rolling out exclusive features, particularly for the Pixel 9 model. This latest iteration introduces enhanced connectivity options, allowing users to link GoPro cameras or other Pixel phones via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. This capability enables streaming from multiple angles on popular platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, mirroring the multicamera functionality seen in Apple’s devices. Furthermore, the Pixel Studio app has been upgraded to allow users to create stylized images or stickers of individuals, ensuring that the tool is not misused for generating realistic AI images.
