Google Wallet brings digital ID support to UK, more US states

What you need to know

As of today, residents in the U.K. can now integrate their passports as a digital ID within Google Wallet. This innovative feature aims to streamline the identification process, allowing users to verify their age and identity in a safe and secure manner.

In a strategic collaboration with the Rail Delivery Group, Google is providing train travelers the option to utilize their digital ID for select Railcards, enhancing the convenience of travel. Furthermore, discussions are underway with the U.K.’s Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology to explore additional applications of this technology, such as verifying identities for alcohol purchases.

In a recent press release, Google announced the expansion of Digital ID access through Google Wallet for U.K. residents. This initiative aligns with similar offerings in various U.S. states, where individuals can store their driver’s licenses and state IDs digitally. With this new feature, U.K. residents can effortlessly create digital ID passes using their passports, securely storing them in Google Wallet. This advancement allows for quick identity verification with just a tap on their smartphones, eliminating the need to present physical IDs repeatedly.

The initial rollout includes a partnership with the Rail Delivery Group, enabling train travelers to use their digital IDs during their journeys. However, it is crucial to note that these digital IDs do not replace physical ones, and their use is not permitted at airports for travel purposes.

Using Google Wallet is straightforward. Users simply open the app, tap “Add to Wallet”, select “ID”, and follow the prompts. The process mirrors that of adding a U.S. passport to Google Wallet. Users will be guided to capture images of both sides of their ID and record a brief selfie video for verification. Within minutes, a notification will confirm that the digital ID is ready for use, easily accessible alongside other payment cards.

To enhance user privacy, Google has incorporated a sophisticated technology known as Zero Knowledge Proof (ZKP) into Google Wallet. This ensures that the websites or apps used for identity verification cannot trace back to the user’s personal information. This dual verification capability allows users to confirm their identity and age simultaneously in applications like Bumble, fostering a safer online environment. Looking ahead, Google plans to open-source its ZKP technology integration, making it available for other wallets and online services.

In parallel, Google is broadening its digital ID access to include Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia, allowing residents in these areas to add government-issued digital IDs to their Google Wallets. Additionally, the eligibility for digital IDs is expanding to other services in states such as Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, and New Mexico. For example, users will soon be able to utilize their mobile IDs at the DMV, enhancing the customer experience.

Residents in these states can also create a digital ID pass from a U.S. passport, facilitating domestic travel with TSA security at supported airports, even if they lack a driver’s license or state-issued ID. Future capabilities will allow users to leverage their digital ID for account recovery on platforms like Amazon, access online health services through CVS and MyChart by Epic, and verify profiles on ride-sharing services like Uber.

Lastly, Google Wallet is set to expand its reach to 50 additional countries, enabling users to view and utilize digital passes within the app and on the web, even in regions where tap-to-pay functionality is not yet available.
