Google will soon retire this handy Play Store feature

Google has announced the impending discontinuation of the Share apps feature on its Play Store, a service that allowed users to effortlessly share applications with nearby individuals. Introduced in 2022, this feature utilized Quick Share—previously known as Nearby Share—to facilitate app transfers without the need for a robust Wi-Fi connection or internet access.

While the Share apps feature provided a convenient solution for sharing certain applications, it came with limitations. Notably, users were unable to share paid applications, books, movies, age-restricted apps, or corporate applications. Nevertheless, the ability to share free apps without relying on internet connectivity proved beneficial for many.

Transitioning to Alternatives

In the recent December release notes for version 44.1 of the Play Store, Google confirmed the retirement of this feature. The announcement succinctly stated, “The Share apps feature on Google Play will be retiring.” This decision has left users seeking alternatives for app sharing.

Fortunately, a similar functionality remains available through the Files by Google app. Users can still share any Android application installed on their devices using Quick Share via this platform. Although the Play Store’s app sharing option will gradually phase out, it may take some time before the feature is entirely removed from the interface, allowing users to adapt to this change.
