Googlebook Android App Compatibility: Here’s why you might choose Qualcomm over Intel models

Google has acknowledged that not all Android applications will function flawlessly on its newly launched Googlebooks, which are powered by Intel processors. While the first batch of these devices is now available for purchase, users hoping to enjoy the same Android apps they cherish on their smartphones may find better compatibility with devices utilizing ARM-based Qualcomm chips.

Initially, Google had promoted the Googlebooks as being designed to “work seamlessly with your Android phone.” This includes a feature reminiscent of Apple’s Handoff, allowing users to transition tasks from their phones to laptops effortlessly. Additionally, users can access individual app downloads through the Google Play Store.

In a conversation with Android Authority, Google asserted that the “vast majority” of Android apps available on the Play Store operate without issues. However, they noted that some “complex” applications may encounter challenges. Google has committed to a phase of optimization to enhance compatibility across the board.

A spokesperson for the company stated: “The vast majority of Android apps run smoothly across both Intel and Qualcomm Googlebooks right out of the box. Because many Android apps were originally designed for ARM chips, a small handful of complex apps or games need some developer tuning to run their best on Intel-based platforms. We’re working hand-in-hand with app developers, Intel, and Qualcomm to continuously optimize performance and expand compatibility across the entire portfolio.”

While this may not pose a significant concern in the long run, those seeking perfect integration straight from the box might consider opting for the Snapdragon models instead.

Currently, this preference points to devices like the Dell XPS and HP Googlebook, which are equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite CPU. In contrast, Lenovo, ASUS, and Acer Googlebooks feature the Intel Core Ultra 5 processor.

These Gemini-powered laptops are tailored for AI-first usage, boasting innovative features such as Magic Cursor, which allows users to hover the cursor over an item on the screen to automatically solicit input from Gemini. Each device comes with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, promising up to 14 hours of battery life.
