Google’s Phone app could make resuming on-hold calls easier (APK teardown)

Google is currently exploring a new feature for its Phone app that aims to enhance user experience during calls. A recent update indicates the introduction of an “Unhold” shortcut in call notifications, designed specifically for those who frequently place calls on hold. This new button will replace the existing “Mute” option whenever a user opts to hold a call.

Enhancements in Call Management

The Google Phone app has maintained a consistent interface, prioritizing user familiarity, especially for essential functions like making calls. However, Google periodically evaluates user expectations and experiences. Recently, the company has begun rolling out a Material 3 Expressive redesign, which includes new interfaces for incoming call screens, now available to beta users. Among these updates, a noteworthy change is the introduction of the Unhold button in ongoing call notifications.

Currently, when a call is accepted, users receive a notification that allows them to manage the call directly from the notification shade. This includes options to hang up, switch to speaker mode, or mute the microphone. However, if a call is put on hold, users must return to the main call screen to resume the conversation, which can be inconvenient.

The latest beta version of the Google Phone app, v184.0, includes code suggesting that the Unhold button will allow users to resume calls directly from the ongoing call notification. This feature promises to streamline the process, eliminating the need to navigate back to the main screen. Early tests have successfully activated this feature, showcasing its potential benefits.

Currently, users see the standard options during a call, which remain unchanged when a call is placed on hold. The anticipated Unhold button will replace the Mute button, as muting an already held call serves no purpose. This thoughtful redesign reflects a deeper understanding of user behavior and needs.

It is worth noting that while this feature is in development, it has not yet been made available to the public. As Google continues to refine its Phone app, users can look forward to a more intuitive calling experience in the near future.
