Here’s an early look at Google TV app’s Material 3 Expressive overhaul (APK teardown)

Google is in the process of refreshing its Google TV app, aligning it with the vibrant aesthetics of Android’s Material 3 Expressive design language. This anticipated update promises a more colorful interface, showcasing accented gradients, buttons, and various user interface elements that enhance the overall visual experience.

Visual Enhancements on the Horizon

Recent explorations into a beta version of the app have revealed a glimpse of these changes, which include a revamped blue color palette and a new section for recent searches. Additionally, there are indications of an upcoming “Hot and New” tab, although these features are still in development and not yet available to the public.

In the latest release of the Google TV app (version 4.39.3208.761013668.5), users can expect to see several interface updates. The For You tab, for instance, is set to become much more vibrant, with an updated search icon and a gradient that draws from the accent color of the current image in the preview carousel. This shift not only enhances the visual appeal but also makes text, buttons, and carousel indicators larger and more prominent.

As illustrated in the accompanying screenshots, the transition from the current user interface to the updated design is striking. The new For You page is expected to feature a lively aesthetic, while the loading screens and movie/show pages will also benefit from these enhancements. Notably, the floating action button (FAB) for connecting to a TV has been transformed from a muted gray to a more engaging blue, further contributing to the app’s refreshed look.

While these design changes are poised to breathe new life into the Google TV app, users will need to exercise a bit of patience. The rollout of the Material 3 Expressive redesign is anticipated to occur following the stable release of Android 16 QPR1. As developments unfold, updates will be provided to keep users informed about the availability of these exciting new features.
