The Google app on Android is poised for a visual refresh, aligning with the latest trends in design through the Material 3 Expressive language. Recent findings from the latest beta release (version 16.22.44) reveal a series of subtle yet impactful changes that promise to enhance user experience.
Design Enhancements on the Horizon
Among the notable updates is a translucent gradient background for the status bar, which aims to modernize the app’s overall aesthetic. This change is already visible in the beta version, although its impact may vary depending on the theme settings of the user’s device. The effect is particularly striking in light mode, while it may blend seamlessly into the background for dark theme users.
In addition to the status bar, the progress bar beneath the search functionality is receiving a makeover. The new design features a slightly thicker and more rounded appearance, enhancing visibility and user interaction during searches.
Another anticipated adjustment involves the tabs located at the bottom of the screen. Currently, these tabs remain fixed as users scroll through content. However, the upcoming update will introduce a dynamic feature where the tabs will hide during scrolling, allowing for a more immersive browsing experience. This change will be complemented by a new Material 3 Expressive loading animation that activates when users reach the end of their feed.
Furthermore, a new “Refresh” button is set to make its debut under the search bar as users navigate through the feed. While this feature is not yet functional in the current beta, it indicates Google’s commitment to enhancing user interactivity within the app.
As these updates are rolled out in the coming days, users can look forward to a more refined and engaging experience within the Google app, reflecting the ongoing evolution of digital design standards.
