I couldn’t sign into the PlayStation App on Android, but I found an easy way to get around Sony’s finicky 2FA

Sony has recently faced criticism for various decisions, including the discontinuation of physical game discs. However, the focus here is on a common issue that many PlayStation app users encounter, particularly when attempting to log into their accounts.

After signing out of a secondary PlayStation account, I attempted to access my primary profile, which is secured with two-factor authentication (2FA). Unfortunately, I found myself in a frustrating predicament: the verification text messages from Sony were nowhere to be found. With the weekend upon us, I realized I would have to wait until Monday for customer support to assist me.

This problem has affected numerous PlayStation account users, preventing them from logging into their PS4s and PS5s. In my case, I had stored my backup codes in such a secure location that I could not locate them when I needed them most. Here’s how I navigated this challenge:

1. Open the PlayStation app and tap Sign In.
2. Enter your email address and tap Next.
3. Instead of inputting your password, select the Trouble Signing In? option.
4. Choose Recover Your Account > to reset your password.
5. You will be redirected to the account recovery portal. Enter your email address and tap Send Link.
6. Once the password recovery email arrives, opt to set up a passkey instead of a password, which will automatically disable 2FA.
7. After setting up your passkey, sign in to the PlayStation app using this new credential.

Previously, PlayStation Network (PSN) users had the option to use 2FA on their consoles if they did not receive a verification code via SMS. However, this feature is no longer available, making it crucial to have backup codes on hand. Fortunately, if you find yourself without these codes, this workaround allows you to reset your account without relying on 2FA. Once your passkey is established, it integrates with your password manager, ensuring you have a secure method of access—just be cautious not to lock yourself out of that as well.
