Google has recently initiated the rollout of Android 17 Beta 3, a significant update that promises to enhance user experience with a range of new features. Following the relatively subdued Beta 1 and Beta 2, this latest iteration brings a wealth of improvements that users are eager to explore. Having spent a week with Android 17 Beta 3 on my Pixel device, I’ve pinpointed four standout features that have truly elevated my daily interactions with the platform.
App Bubbles
One of the most notable additions in Android 17 Beta 3 is the introduction of app bubbles. Initially announced with Beta 2, these floating shortcuts allow users to access their favorite applications in a more dynamic way. To utilize app bubbles, simply press and hold the desired app icon, then tap the new bubble icon resembling a square with an arrow. This action transforms the application into a floating bubble that can be moved around the screen at will.
What I find particularly appealing about app bubbles is their multi-tasking capability. For instance, I can have multiple messaging apps like Slack, Google Messages, and Telegram all accessible at once. This feature has proven especially useful on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, where the large display allows for a seamless experience. While there are some limitations regarding how bubbles can be opened and closed, the potential for enhanced productivity is clear.
Separate Wi-Fi and Mobile Data Toggles
Another welcomed enhancement in this update is the separation of Wi-Fi and mobile data toggles in the Quick Settings menu. Previously, users had to navigate through multiple steps to toggle between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Now, with a single tap, I can easily switch off Wi-Fi when I need to rely on mobile data, streamlining a process I engage in multiple times throughout the day. This seemingly minor adjustment significantly improves the overall user experience, making it more intuitive and efficient.
Assistant Volume Control
For those who frequently use virtual assistants like Gemini, the new assistant volume control feature is a game changer. Users can now set a distinct volume level for the assistant, independent of the media volume. This means I no longer have to adjust the volume every time I switch from asking Gemini a question to watching videos or listening to music. Such a simple yet effective feature enhances daily interactions with the device, making it more user-friendly.
Hide App Names on Home Screen
Lastly, Android 17 Beta 3 introduces a fun customization option: the ability to hide app names on the home screen. By accessing the Wallpaper & style settings, users can toggle off app names next to their icons, resulting in a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing interface. This feature addresses a long-standing request for greater customization within the Pixel Launcher, allowing users to personalize their devices to a greater extent.
