Android 17 has officially made its debut for Pixel devices, bringing with it a suite of new features designed to enhance user experience. While the excitement may not rival the leap from Android 15 to 16, this update introduces several noteworthy enhancements that promise to streamline multitasking and improve overall functionality.
The upgrade process on my Pixel 9 Pro was smooth, taking approximately 30 minutes to complete. For those with Pixel phones, the update should be rolling out shortly, while other Android users may need to wait for their respective device updates.
1. Desktop Mode
One of the standout features of Android 17 is the newly introduced Desktop Mode. This innovative capability allows users to connect their Android phones to an external monitor, transforming the mobile interface into a desktop-like experience when paired with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. This feature, akin to Samsung’s DeX, promises to redefine how users interact with their devices, making it a potential game-changer for productivity.
2. App Bubbles
Another significant addition is the app bubbles feature, which elevates multitasking to new heights. By allowing users to “bubble” apps, this feature facilitates seamless switching between applications, mimicking a desktop environment. To activate app bubbles, simply long-press an app launcher and select the Bubble option. Once an app is bubbled, it remains accessible on the home screen, enabling users to group frequently used apps for quick access.
3. Selfie Camera in Screengrabs
For those who create how-to content or need to demonstrate tasks remotely, the ability to enable the selfie camera during screen recordings is a welcome enhancement. This feature allows users to narrate their actions while appearing on screen, making it easier to guide others through various processes. Activating this feature is straightforward: open the Quick Tiles section, tap “Screen recording,” and enable the selfie cam.
4. Recent Apps Improvement
The recent apps page has also received a thoughtful upgrade. Users will now see the full names of apps along with a drop-down menu that offers options to pin, split the screen, take a screenshot, or clear recent apps. This improvement enhances interaction with the recent apps page, making it more intuitive and user-friendly.
5. Early GUI Linux Support
Android 17 marks the beginning of an exciting evolution for the Linux terminal, with early support for running GUI applications. While this feature is still in its infancy and requires further development, it opens the door for users to explore the potential of running full Linux environments directly from their devices. Initial attempts to install GUI applications may face challenges, but the groundwork is being laid for future advancements.
6. Enhanced HDR Brightness
For enthusiasts of HDR content, the enhanced HDR brightness feature is a significant improvement. This allows users to customize how HDR videos and images are displayed on their devices, ensuring that vibrant visuals can be enjoyed to their fullest. By adjusting the HDR brightness settings, users can achieve a more dynamic viewing experience, particularly for content that benefits from striking contrasts and vivid colors.
While Android 17 introduces several other features, these highlights stand out as particularly impactful, promising to enhance the user experience and redefine how we interact with our devices.
