Media apps in Android Auto are about to get a big design boost

Google is enhancing the Car App Library, introducing a suite of new features designed to empower developers in creating more engaging media applications for Android Auto and vehicles equipped with Google Built-in. These enhancements are set to transform the user experience, allowing for a richer interaction with media apps while on the road.

New Features for Developers

Among the notable updates, developers will gain access to expanded headers that provide visual emphasis, spotlight sections for highlighting key content, and new progress bars to keep users informed. The introduction of grid item variations will further enrich the layout options available to developers.

Additionally, the library will now include innovative components such as chips, compact items, and interactive headers, which are designed to enhance usability. A particularly exciting addition is the mini-player component, enabling users to control playback effortlessly while navigating through the app’s content.

Early Access and Integration

The updates are being rolled out with versions 1.8.0-beta01 and 1.9.0-alpha01, and developers are encouraged to sign up for early access to these new templates. Notably, popular media applications like Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music are already integrating these features to elevate their user experiences.

In addition to these enhancements, Google has announced the upcoming support for video playback in vehicles, which was revealed last week. This feature will begin rolling out to compatible vehicles later this year, specifically for users with devices operating on Android 17 or higher.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, Google plans to introduce further updates that will allow developers to create a templated experience that transitions smoothly into the full app interface once users park their vehicles. The new templates will also facilitate agentic and voice-based interactions within apps, enhancing the overall functionality.

Moreover, the addition of Maps SDK support for Cars with Google Built-in will enable developers to render map-based content seamlessly within their applications, further enriching the driving experience.
