Now There’s Finally a Way to Get Apple CarPlay in Your GM-Built EV

In a notable shift within the automotive landscape, General Motors announced plans to phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its electric vehicles, a decision that stirred considerable concern among consumers who prioritize seamless smartphone integration in their driving experience. However, a new player has emerged to address this gap in the market: the EVPlay LT.

  • The EVPlay LT is a device that plugs into your General Motors-built EV and allows you to use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • There’s an app to download to the infotainment system, and then you simply plug in the USB device, with the whole process apparently taking two minutes.
  • The EVPlay LT costs 9 and does not require any subscription fees.

Manufactured by EVPlay, the LT device offers both wired and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, compatible with a range of GM electric vehicles, including the 2024–2026 Chevy Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Hummer EV, and Cadillac Escalade IQ, among others. Priced at 9, the device is designed for ease of use, requiring no special tools or modifications to the vehicle.

To set up the EVPlay LT, owners need to install an application on their vehicle’s infotainment system before connecting the device via a USB port. EVPlay claims that this straightforward setup process can be completed in approximately two minutes, allowing drivers to quickly regain access to their preferred smartphone features.

In addition to the LT, EVPlay offers a more advanced option known as the EVPlay Max. This premium system, priced at 5, enhances the driving experience with capabilities such as video streaming, gaming, HDMI connectivity, Bluetooth accessory linking, and the ability to download Android applications from the Google Play Store. Notably, the Max can also function as a mobile Android-based computer outside the vehicle, and a version tailored for Rivian vehicles is also available.

While the introduction of these devices provides a welcome solution for GM EV owners, EVPlay has acknowledged the potential risk that GM could disable the software after installation. The company has expressed its commitment to advocating for its customers, stating, “We would obviously keep up the good fight as long as we could, but ultimately they are in control of their system.” They emphasize that maintaining customer satisfaction is essential for GM’s long-term loyalty.
