Pixel Screenshots just moved away from using on-device AI only, but is it less private?

The Pixel Screenshots app, initially launched with the Pixel 9, has undergone a significant transformation. Originally reliant on the on-device AI capabilities of the Tensor chip, the app is now embracing a hybrid approach that incorporates cloud processing to enhance its functionality.

Transition to Cloud-Based AI

The latest update, version 1.26.134.11, reflects this shift in strategy. The app’s settings have been revised to indicate that it will no longer exclusively utilize on-device AI. The previous version explicitly stated, “Search your screenshots with on-device AI.” In contrast, the new iteration simplifies this to “Search your screenshots with AI,” accompanied by an explanation that clarifies data processing may occur either on-device or in the cloud.

This evolution raises questions about the new features that cloud-based AI may introduce. While specifics remain undisclosed, Google assures users that their privacy will be a priority. The company plans to employ a “secure, isolated environment” for processing screenshots, likely leveraging its Private AI Compute technology. This approach has already been successfully integrated into other Pixel applications, such as Magic Cue and Recorder, enhancing their capabilities while maintaining user privacy.

As the rollout of this update is still in its early stages, many users may not yet see it available in the Play Store. However, anticipation builds as the update is expected to reach a broader audience in the near future, promising an enriched experience for Pixel users.
