Samsung has recently paused a SmartThings update for its smart refrigerators in South Korea following reports from users experiencing significant malfunctions. As detailed by ZDNET Korea, numerous owners have taken to Samsung’s community forum to voice their concerns, noting that their refrigerators have ceased functioning entirely, leading to spoiled food and other inconveniences.
Among the reported issues are failures in the automatic door-opening feature and the internal lights not illuminating. A representative from Samsung addressed the situation on the company’s forum, stating:
“Yesterday (9/22), an error occurred during the testing process for a Samsung refrigerator software update. Abnormal symptoms have been observed in the refrigerator power and screen of some customers. We are currently taking emergency measures as a top priority through Samsung Electronics Service Centers.”
This incident raises important questions about the integrity of software updates for connected appliances, particularly how an unfinished update could inadvertently reach consumers. ZDNet Korea speculates that a “system error” may have led to the premature rollout of the update. In response to the growing concerns, Samsung has halted the distribution of the problematic update.
For those affected, Samsung has recommended reaching out to their service center for assistance. Reports indicate that technicians have been replacing the motherboards in the malfunctioning units. However, many customers are also calling for compensation for the food that has been spoiled due to the refrigerator failures. This issue is particularly unfortunate as it coincides with the Chuseok holiday, a significant time for families in Korea.
